Component Versioning

Library components are versioned, so component instances can exist as different versions while remaining connected to the same component. Instances are not updated until a new version is published, and the update applied to a particular instance.

Edit and publish a component

When you edit a component in the library, your changes are held on the component until you publish them. While a component has unpublished changes, it’s marked as modified, and the projects using it don’t see the changes yet.

Edit a component:

  1. Select a component in your library and make a copy change

  2. Click Save changes. The component will now be marked as Modified until published

Publish a component:

  1. Select the modified component in your library

  2. Click Publish changes, review the change, and click Publish

💡 To publish several at once, click the top right Publish button in the library and select all the components to publish

Update a component instance

When a new version of a component is published, its instances show that an update is available. Select an instance to compare its current text with the latest version before you update.

Update a component instance:

  1. Select the text item attached to the component

  2. Click the Update available icon (🔄), then select Review Update to see the new updates. Review the changes then click Update instance

    1. Alternatively, click Update selected instance to update without reviewing first

In a Ditto project, click the 📖 indicator to check for stale components, and open the review modal to bulk update components changes to project instances.

Editing an instance

An instance’s text comes from its component, so it can’t be edited on its own. If you need different copy in one place, you can detach the instance from the component and save your edit as a regular text item.

Detach and save an instance:

  1. Select the instance and make your edit

  2. Click Detach and save
